The Joy Jar is a five-minute short film created by autistic writer and producer Michelle Worthington, with disability and neurodiversity central to both the story and its making. Set on Coochiemudlo Island in Queensland, the film follows two neurodivergent cousins, played by autistic child actors, as they use their imaginations to help them understand their emotions and connection to the world around them. Told through quiet observation, creativity, and play, the film reflects how neurodivergent children see and interpret their environment in ways that are rich, thoughtful, and emotionally intelligent. The narrative avoids stereotypes, instead celebrating difference as a strength. The Joy Jar is also a reflection of inclusive practice behind the camera.
